“Laer” is a nickname many of my friends use. Why they have to shorten “Larry” I can’t understand. I noticed some of them pronounced it “Lair” and others as a diphthong, beginning like “Lair” then adding “-erh”. Why they had to LENGTHEN the name back to two syllables is another mystery to me.
But having a Gaelic background I researched this peculiar-sounding name and discovered that Laer is one spelling of Ler, God of the sea. And in another dialect means teacher or wise man, not a big stretch for an aerospace software and systems engineer. So I made a virtue out of oddity and use it as a pen name.
